Lent 1 – 9 Mar 2025

The Season of Lent

Lent is an important part of the Christian calendar, it is a solemn time when Christians can prepare for the celebrations of Easter by reflecting on the last year and finding ways to live a life based on the teaching of Jesus.

Lent lasts for 40 days because this is the amount of time Jesus fasted in the wilderness before he began his public ministry. Sundays, which always celebrate the resurrection, are excluded from this total of forty.
Some people give up something during Lent as they are following the example of Jesus who fasted in the wilderness before he began his public ministry. Others take on a spiritual discipline like giving to those in need, or praying on a set schedule.

During Lent, many people also set aside time to study the Bible and meet with other Christians to reflect on Jesus’s life and prepare for the events of Holy Week and Easter.

Our worship reflects the solemn season. We only have flowers for special memorials. The colour of our hangings and clergy stoles is purple, a colour traditionally associated with both royalty and suffering. In the context of Lent, purple also symbolizes penance, repentance, and renewal.

We refrain from saying or singing “alleluia,” in Lent as a way of recognizing the solemnity of the season and anticipating the glorious praise to be sung in celebration of Jesus’ Resurrection on Easter Sunday!
