Baptism of Jesus – 12 Jan 2025
Greetings to you these cold January days. As the season of/after Epiphany unfolds in the western and eastern calendar the church year is focused on the different ways and places that we have come to understand who Jesus is: birth, infancy, baptism, early ministry. In our own lives we have moments of wonder and Epiphany as well where we learn new things about ourselves and our God.
In this season, with the long grey days, the tinsel put away and the guests gone home, which can sometimes leave us feeling flat or let down, I am encouraged by the words of Civil Rights activist and poet Howard Thurman:
“When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flock,
The work of Christmas begins:
To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nations,
To bring peace among people,
To make music in the heart.”
So, my friends I am glad that we get to share in this ongoing work of Christmas together.
Blessings,
Rev. Laurel
